MIT mixed doubles teams compete near Boston

Two of the five mixed doubles teams based at Middlebury Indoor Tennis in the September-December 2008 season posted leading records in Vermont-wide competition last fall, and therefore were able to compete in the New England sectional tournaments in the Boston area June 26-28.
Neither team won the round robin qualifier of Friday and Saturday, and therefore did not advance to semifinal competition on Sunday.
However, the intermediate team "Mixmasters" did defeat the eventual winner in their event, 2 matches to 1, but unfortunately lost two other meetings. Furthermore, the advanced team "Hicks 'n' Chicks" lost only to the eventual winner of the qualifying flight by 2 matches to 1. Had the they won just one additional individual match in that meeting, then they would have advanced to the semifinal round on Sunday.
Team members on the "Mixmasters" traveling to the tournament were Barbara Beatty and Doug Smith of Middlebury; Christina Wadsworth of Weybridge; Captain Charles Peake and Linda Peake of Orwell; and John Baker of Addison. All six played in each of the three matches.
For the "Hicks 'n' Chicks," a Burlington- Middlebury- and Rutland-area team, local team members playing in the tournament were Jim and Stephanie Foley of New Haven. They won their first match in a tie-breaker and their second match 6-4, 6-4. Completing the roster for the Boston trip were Captain Sarah Szafir and Dennis Langdell of Essex Junction; Rob Bromley and Mark Stephenson of Jericho; Frank and Aimee O'Brien Babbott of Hinesburg (who nearly won the deciding match, losing 7-6, 6-4); Joan Solomon of Colchester; and Andrew Shinn and Kristen Kenosh of Rutland.
Details of the "Mixmasters" 2-1 win and losses of 3-0 and 2-1 are at middleburytennis.com.
Also posted is the "Hicks 'n' Chicks" record: wins at 2-1 and 2-1 and the deciding 2-1 loss.
