Winter 2010 -- 2011

Welcome to New Members: Andy and Zosha Andersson, Burgess (Burge) Ayres, Larry Bayle, Brianna and Joe Cotroneo, Stephanie Foley, David McCluskey, Barbara Pelton, Bob Rathbun and Marian Wright.
The MIT Adult Championships for 2011 will have singles for men and women on January 6-8, 2012, and mixed doubles on January 20-22. Per-person Fees are $15 for singles, $10 each for doubles, or $20 for both events.
Last year's adult singles champions were Ben Randeltt and Tina Endicott. Michele Butler and Chris Murray were (repeat) mixed doubles champions. Call the MIT Office to register, or file the entry form.
The Pot-Luck Series was resumed on Saturday November 19 when Deb Kelley organized a play-eat-play event that was enjoyed by some two dozen Members and non-Members alike. Next, Franz Collas and Michele Butler followed the some-times tradition on Friday December 16. The slot for next host/organizer is open. Just let the office know and we will post flyers.
MUHS Pre-Season Tennis Practice is again welcome at MIT. This year the off-hours sessions (early am/late pm) run with no court fees, as will emergency bad-weather backup (subject to availability). MIT Member Laura Rumbough will coach the girls; and MIT Pro Franz Collas will coach the boys.
In USTA League Tennis, MIT fielded five teams for the fall-winter 2011-12 season. (See the schedule and results on the web: MIT or USTA.)
The "Mix 'N Match," a 7.0 Senior Team has Sara Marshall, Captain, John Baker, Charlie Biss, Gail Jette, Bob Kesner, Charlie and Linda Peake, Doug Smith, Christina Wadsworth and Marty and Patty Whittemore.
They compete in the same league as the other MIT team, "Nettrix," Ken Schoen and Jan Bark, Captains, plus Bruce and Donna Baldwin. Edwina Ho, Melissa Lourie, Lee Randlett, John Reynolds and Cy and T. Tall.
Tri Level was "tried" again this year, but it turned out that in this part of Vermont no one could actually put togther a true 3-level team (such as 3.0, 3.5, 4.0) so the USTA-VT settled on an experimental and simple format of just 4.0 men's singles. MIT has 3 of the 5 teams: "Calm Intensity" of Curt Gross and Chris Murray; "Midd Duo" of Caleb Kenna and Lee Randlett; "The Midd Fuzz" of Aaron Crystal and Bill DiLillo.
A Late-Winter/Spring Season will have 4 official USTA teams, plus two 6.0 Mixed teams playing "off the record." Schoen and Bark return to lead the "El Medio Bayas" in the coming Adult 7.0 Mixed Doubles season in a league that will contain a reconstituted "Mix 'N Match" with Dana Barrow and Sara as Captains.
"Love Hurts," starts anew at 8.0 with James Inglis and Carrie Wulfman, Captains, Michele Butler, Beth Cook, Jim and Stephanie Foley, Curt Gross, Chris Murray and Lee Randlett.
MIT Pro Franz Collas launches into a 3-team 9.0 League with the "Hicks n Chicks," plus Michele Butler, Bill DiLillo, Jim and Stephanie Foley, Chris Murray, Sarah Peluso and Laura Rumbough.
Repeating this year are two NTRP 6.0 teams: "Line Dancers," John Reynolds, Captain, and "Rematch," Mary Lynn O'Shea and Donna Baldwin, Captains. However, those teams are literally in a league of their own in Vermont, and play only each other, at MIT (with no USTA fee!).
Final NTRP Levels for use in 2012 have been issued by the USTA. Several players who appear regularly at MIT received upgrades. An extract covering all players who played on Vermont teams recently is posted at middleburytennis.com for men and women.
Drop-In Tennis is active at MIT. Choose among Men's Night Monday at 7, Women's Night Wednesday at 5:30, Wednesday noon for all, and also Thursday noon, which is especially for seniors (non-member seniors only $10).
Grand Slam Tennis Tours continues to offer MIT Members a 15% discount for arrangements at many world-class tournaments, including all the "Slams." See grandslamtennistours.com.
Middlebury College Tennis teams have booked MIT for practices and matches on certain hours of February 24-5 and March 10. Watch for the details in late Feburay.
