FREE CLINICS for ADULTS return in April. Beginners or Intermediates choose from these Fridays: April 11 and 18, 6:00 to 7:00pm .
MIT WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS: Jan Bark, Marcus Causton, Edwina Ho, Neil Matthews, Amy and Eric Rice, Thomas Smith, and Tim Wilcox.
THE ANNUAL JUNIOR CLUB TOURNAMENTS ran just after Christmas 2007. Champions were Kate Knowles (Girls 12s), Christian Higgins (Boys 12s), Connor Gross (Boys 14s), Abby Killorin (Girls 16s), and Alex Marshall (Boys 16s).
THE MIT CLUB ADULT TOURNAMENTS followed a leisurely pace January - March. Pat Davies won the Women's Singles title with a 3-set win over Linda Carr. The Men's Tournament, with a full draw of 14 players, was won by Chris Murray in a 2-set final with John Ballard. The Mixed Doubles tournament is still in progress. Jim and Stephanie Foley will eventually meet Michele Butler and John Ballard in the final. Scores are posted on our tournament web page.
LEAGUE TENNIS begins in April with six teams:
"Sweet Spots," (2.5, Franz Collas, Acting Captain);
"Racquettes," (3.0, Sara Marshall, Captain);
"Lobber Barons," (3.0, Charlie Peake);
"Margueritas," (3.5, Carrie Wulfman);
"Midd Hit Men," (3.5, Curt Gross);
"Hard Volleys," (4.0, Marty Whittemore).
The match schedule for April includes the 4th, 6th and 12th at MIT; see the details at MIT or the website.
SUMMER CAMPS for ages 5-17 at MIT will run June 23 through August 8 with several 2-hour sessions Mondays through Thursdays, and Team Matches on Fridays. Details will be available soon at MIT or the web site.
DAVID LAMPSON, USPTR, joins Franz at SoJo Tennis, LLC, for the summer months. Lampson will be at all SoJo's venues (Basin Harbor, Midd Rec Dept, and MIT) and in particular will be available at MIT for lessons, including weekends. His resumé includes 4 years at the Killington school, 9 years at Amelia Island, and clinic instruction with Pam Shriver and Mary Joe Fernández.
TEAMS from BRATTLEBORO and ST ALBANS, in the Senior Mixed Doubles League, met twice at MIT on March 15. In the morning one was a "home" team, and in the afternoon the other one was "home." That arrangement allowed much less travel for the widely separated teams. (MIT has no teams in Senior Mixed Doubles this year.)
WHEELCHAIR TENNIS has come to MIT courtesy of non-Resident Member Marcus Causton, a very talented player. Marcus and MIT Member Pat Davies, USPTA, ran a free clinic for wheelchair players throughout Vermont on March 15, after the close of the Brattleboro-St Albans matches. Causton and MIT photographer Kirsten McEdward co-operated on a story published in the Addison Independent on March 20. A similar piece is on our web site.
MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE tennis used MIT all day on Sunday March 9 for an invitational meet. The men met NYU in the morning, and the women played Skidmore in the afternoon. Scores in the (6-0, 9-0) sweep are posted on our web site.
FRIDAY and SATURDAY APRIL 25-26 the College has MIT all day long as a bad weather backup for the NESCAC tournament. The usual play at MIT will proceed only if the weather is good and the college teams can play outdoors. In other words, reservations can be accepted only a short time in advance.
MUHS Boy's and Girl's Tennis Teams, coached by Bob Crystal and Sarah Lynn, will be practicing at MIT in March and April in the off-hours of early morning and evening. Good luck to both teams!
THE GRASS ROOTS TENNIS CAMP for juniors runs August 4-5 at Windridge in Roxbury. Please contact Kirsten McEdward to apply for a place.
MASSAGE THERAPY in our upper level is offered by Sally Burrell (453-7397) and Jaclynne Reed (349-8562).
