News Story:
Midd Vermont Mid-Level Tennis Tournaments
The "Midd Vermont Mid-Level Tennis Tournaments" had
their final rounds Sunday September 18 at Middlebury
Indoor Tennis. As the title suggests, that series is
meant to exclude the area's unusually strong players so
that other enthusiasts will feel free to enter.
In the Men's Doubles Final Chris Murray and John Healy
(both Middlebury) defeated Bob Crystal (Middlebury) and
Carl Boss (Bristol) 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, while in the Mixed
Doubles Final Annie Janeway (Middlebury) and Healy
defeated Bo Price (Ferrisburg) and David Ignat (Ripton)
6-2, 6-1
Scores from the Semi Final Rounds were: Murray and
Healy over high school players Ben Randlett
(Middlebury) and Jon Lange (Ferrisburg) 6-1, 7-6;
Crystal and Boss eliminated Frank McDonough (Milton)
and Jim Plante (Essex Jct) 6-2, 6-2; Janeway and Healy
narrowly won over Curt and Sharon Gross (Middlebury)
6-4, 7-5; Price and Ignat got by Karen and Jim Plante
(Essex Jct) 6-2, 6-3.
All scores, including the early rounds and consolation
matches, are at middleburytennis.com
Guest Tournament Director Dr. Curtis Gross said, "It was
great to see local players as well as players from out
of town competing in an atmosphere of friendliness and
sportsmanship."
As suggested by some of the scores given above, there
were several matches that had drama right down to the
end.
In the first round on the men's side, Mark Slattery and
his son Nathan (Moriah, NY) squared off against Murray
and Healy. It was a grueling match in which there were
spectacular points won by each team. Murray and Healy
won the first set but lost the second by the same score
of 6-4. The third set was taken by Murray and Healy
convincingly, by a 6-2 count.
In another men's match, Gross and Tim Wilcox (Rochester)
played Lange and Randlett. This one also went three
sets, as the men (Gross and Wilcox are in their
forties) took the first set from the "boys" (Randlett
and Lange are in high school) 6-4. But the tide
turned, as the boys unleashed a power game that the men
could not handle. Scorching forehands and blistering
serves set the tempo for the next two sets, as the
boys won the match by taking those sets 6-3 and 6-2.
Wilcox was heard several times mumbling "that's a world
class serve," as Lange repeatedly drilled aces and
service winners.
The "boys" then played Murray and Healy in the
semifinals. This was a match of momentum. The boys
seemed to play fast points throughout the match, going
for winners often and without fear. This simply did
not work against Murray and Healy, as these experienced
players were able to dominate the first set 6-1.
They found themselves down 4-0 in the second set before
taking hold and winning it in a tiebreaker.
Then the team of Healy and Murray faced off against the
other finalists, Carl Boss and Bob Crystal. Crystal
and Boss won the first set 6-4, but Murray and Healy
were not rattled. They came storming back to win the
next set 6-0, and the momentum was clearly on their
side going into the final set of the tournament.
Murray and Healy kept up their dominance and won the
set, match and championship 6-1. They had won 12 of
the last 13 games to make a real statement. They played
inspired tennis and earned their first place finish
with class.
